WINDOW MASTER FIN. PROBLEM
From: USERDENIS To: ALL
When I backup my Window Master Finder v1.0 disk, I cannot use this copy,
the drive 0 does not stop turning and the joysticj does not respond. In
the instruction manual, they sais that BACKUP command can be used to
backup the original disk that I have. The original disk works fine.
Any idea ???????
Thanks

Does the manual imply that the backup copy can be run just like the original?
Some programs can be backed up, but only to make a nonrunnable
copy to be used to restore the original disk i it should get trashed.
Perhaps that’s what Window Master does??
(I presume you have tried making another backup to see if that
works any better than the first?)

Cercomp programs are heavily protected, and cannot
be run from any other than the MASTER disk.
They do ask you to make a backup, so that IF the master
gets trashed, in some cases you MIGHT be able to restore
it by backing up FROM the backup TO the master.
But the master has special weird tracks written ABOVE track 35,
(er.. make that above track 34) which are NOT affected by BASIC’s
backup command and are critical for the protection scheme to work.

The problem involved is that I want to send Window Master to my 80 tracks,
96 TPI drive that I use with ADOS3, and eventually to the hard-disk. If
I cannot do that because of a unadvertised and abusive protection, I will
return the program to vendor.
Thanks

I urge you to communicate you desire to Cercomp, who
sold you the product.
It is quite possible that they will be willing o
to take back your 35 track disk and make an 80 track disk
version for you. It is highly UNLIKELY Bill Vergona
will deprotect the program for you!!!
But your really should call him and speak to him about this
matter. Your situation is a CLASSIC example of how
“protection” hurts legitimate users.
Note that if you have acess to an IBM PC with a Copy 2 PC
option board and one 40 track and one 80 track
drive of the type you have on your coco, you can
probably duplicate Window Master on to the 80 track
media of your choice. All of Bill’s stuff, so far,
copies without problem using Copy 2 PC option boards.

Have you tried Spit ‘n Image (for the CoCo) on any Cercomp
programs? That has a pretty good record for copying protected disks.

Yes.. Spitini was, overall, the all time best of its kind on
the CoCo. No… I did not try it… once you have Copy 2 PC,
you tend not to waste time with other, less capable clone systems.
I will say that when I WAS testing Copy 2 PC out, there were
some disks Spitini could not copy that Copy 2 PC could,
but never vice versa.

i believe that it is the case , as they are FAMOUS for such things , it is a
good idea until you realize that the original tends to crash in a way that
makes the copy protection thing that even the original is in fat a backup and
of course any amount of
restoring from the backup itself is useless , i know from experience !
