Coco3fgpa

Is there any information about the Coco3FGPA? There’s not much info on the site. Was the project fox’ed?

A coco4 for $99.00 ???

What is better is the Nexys 2 board from Digilent inc..

For $99 you get a VGA with true 8bit color and the demo software appears to be very modifiable for usage with a COCO3 FPGA. I am write now starting to integrate the video section of the demo software into a GIME 2 chip.

The $99 board comes with a XC3S500E chip, 500K gates, for another $20 the XC3S1200E is on board. The board has 16Mbytes of PSDRAM which can be configured to be 70nS pseudo static ram or in burst mode with up to133 MHz access. Also on board is a PS2 connector and a 16 megabyte flash.

There are also 8 four bit (PMOD) expansion ports with power and ground on each port that utilizes already made made modules that Digilent sells rather cheaply. These include A/D and D/A, servo motor controllers 16×2 LCD display module and others. Also is an expansion port with a wire wrap board that can interface to Nexys 2 board. It has a USB port from which the on board RAM and Flash can be pre-programmed. The board can be powered from the USB port, a battery port or a wall wart. The expansion port has 40 dedicated pins plus JTAG to the wire wrap board so that anything on the wire wrap board can be included in the JTAG chain for programming.

The demo software with the board is neat. I am pleased with the PS2VGAdemo code that allows a background and a floating window which position is controlled by the click of the left mouse button. Oh there is a three button scroll wheel PS2 mouse controller in the demo software. Imagine DECB running is a window of its own? Sized by the values of the Video Mode and Resolution registers. This finally can lead to a revamp of the RSBASIC to bring it into a more modern look and feel.

With the 1.2 million gate part there is plenty of room for two 6309 processors and a more intensive graphics section. This could relieve RSBASIC of much of its software overhead just to draw graphics.

With the demo software and this board the GIME 2 has gained more momentum and has now restarted.

    More soon.

Here is a link to the Nexys 2. To implement a full computer you probably need over 300K gates. I think the Spectrum gate array clone someone did was close to 200K gates (before optimization) without a CPU and it’s simpler than the GIMME. 500K would probably be just right to have some room to grow.

I am aware of the board. It would make a good development board to get a design working and then to off load onto a more dedicated board. The other board mentioned is limited to three bit color and less ram(1Mbyte) even though it is faster.

For a few dollars more($149 US) the Spartan 3E starter board is a nice alternative. It does have a LAN chip integrated on and that is nice also. Lots of DDR SDRAM and flash.

Yes a XC3S500E is more than adequate for any Coco3/4. Still I am a proponent of getting the biggest FPGA you can afford. The Nexys 2 board may not allow the fastest Coco3/4 operation possible but can be economical.
