    Hi Jayee,

I’ve been browsing through Rainbow magazines looking for ideas to improve a hardware project I’m working on and remembered seeing this article just yesterday: “Hamming It Up” by William Barden Jr. Its a morse code trainer.

I’ve extracted the relevant pages to a much smaller PDF and included the disk image in a zip file which you can download here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RXAUUMQC

The Rainbow magazine scan is courtesy of the Maltedmedia ftp site and the Rainbow on Disk image is courtesy of the ftp at Random Rodder’s CoCo Den: http://www.randomrodder.com/coco/

If I come across anything else, I’ll post it here also.

    Hope it helps :)

Here’s another article, but no software or hardware. You may find it interesting nonetheless:

With a simple terminal program, a terminal node controller (or TNC) and a VHF transceiver, your CoCo can instantly communicate with other computers throughout your local area.

    Sounds interesting :)

The article also mentions tracking AMSAT. I know next to nothing about ham radio, but found this link that might be helpful for some freeware AMSAT tracking software:

Here’s another article from Rainbow Nov 89:

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6G4I1MYS

    From the article:

With most of the amateur radio software written for the Commodore and IBM computers, ham radio software for the CoCo may be a bit difficult to locate. However, it is out there. There are several sources for Color Computer ham software, both public domain and commercial. But if you’re only interested in using the CoCo with interfacing devices, no special software is need byond a standard CoCo terminal program.

Many thanks (again)n JasonL. I replied after your first post but I dont think it went through. You have knocked yourself out, Many thanks for all the great leads!!!

I also know next to nothing about HAM radio. I found a site with downloadable, HAM-related software, but none of it is for the CoCo. These programs look like they are primarily for working with AMSAT or Pacsat satellites. They are source files, so despite the fact that they aren’t for the CoCo, you may be able to adapt one or more to what you are trying to do. Take a look at this: http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ftpsoft.html#src.

    Your welcome :)

It’s been interesting learning something about amateur radio. I’ve not known anyone here in Australia that uses it. About the only thing I had seen previously was a mention here and there in U.S. movies, like Contact. I figure that’s what the girl at the start of the movie was using (“CQ, CQ this is (sth sth sth) come back?”). :)

I did a search on this site with the search-term “ham” and found these links:

    and…

I’ve collected the extra articles mentioned by mrnukem from the first link, you can download them here:

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GU8CIP8L

Unfortunately, the Dec ’83 issue was missing pages 38-97 so the article mentioned was missing from the PDF. I wasn’t able to find the Rainbow on Disk/Cassette images for most of the articles either.

The RTSI link given by mrnukem has a HAM.BAS program. I’ve no idea what it’s supposed to do, but it does work :)

Ultimaterm, as mentioned in the seocond post, and the docs are at that link also.

In the Nov ’89 issue of Rainbow, I also found a RTTY program for the CoCo and a simple CoCo 3 terminal program. I added these to the last zip also, should they be of any use.

Sounds like an interesting hobby, hope it helps.

  • JasonL

The Ultimaterm program was mentioned in this post:

    Appologies for the confusion.

    Remz,

Are you double buffering? If not how are your “erasing” your sprites? Dirty Rectangles?
