I have downloaded several .PIX programs from the CLassic Graphics
datalib. Some of them (especially some of the double page ones)
cause my 512K CoCo 3 to lock up, with only a reset to clear it up.
If the .PIX prog is a double page one the arrow keys don’t seem to
work. In either case, if the lock up occurs, the Save option doesn’t
work either. Most .PIX progs (single and double page ones) work fine
being able to scroll with the arrow keys and save a .BIN file (which
VUmaster will then display just fine). Any ideas to what the problem is?

HELLO TRAS:

Been reading the mail here on the FORUM to perhaps get a bit of insight
on the capabilities of various graphics programs. The one’s I’m interested
in are Coco Max III, Color Max 3 and perhaps Color Max 3 Deluxe.

Recently obtained a COCO 3 and I’m ready to purchase a graphics program, but
don’t know which one to choose.

Can you provide me with some information on the advantages and disadvantages of

each the the above mentioned graphics programs. I’m sure they are all
excellent programs, but it seems that their capabilities are different.

Thanks in advance,
Bob, K6ASK

  Goodness gracious!

Where did you get that file anyway? <grin>

  Actually, that’s a new one on me . . .

. . . but maybe some other folks have some idea what’s causing that “ribbon
ripper” reaction from that CIS file. I’m very curious as to what is the
problem, too.

Maybe it’s a graphic of a fine looking female Gemini 10-X!

Seriously, I do hope someone can help you out. My best guess is that the
print head is messed up and the file you were printing out was just
a coincidence. I’d try printing it out again, assuming you have a bit of
ribbon to sacrifice. I do NOT think the contents of the file has anything
to do with it.

If your printer is bi-directional and logic-seeking, it is possible that
something is happening at the carriage return.

                                      — Jim

</grin>

Sory to intrude here but I just went thru a similar maintanence problem
myself. Assuming software code dont’t have ESC R (rip ribbon code) try
tightening the print head belt (a pully/plate far left and bottom front,
just under the head’s home post) then checking the head screws for hand
tightness, or adding a small amount of oil on the tube the print head runs on.
This may not be the source of your particular problem but when these
symptoms showed up on my Gemini, the above fixed it up.–mike

Looking over the lo-res graphics of Level 2 then that should work fine.
I just tried it myself and got an ERROR #246 (not ready) at 10,19. Something
is definitely not right here as it is leaving a black band across the screen
at approximately (x,25) with that loop. The program I am using to test this
is as follows:

PROCEDURE Graphics
DIM i,j:INTEGER

PRINT CHR$(15);CHR$(0);CHR$(5); \ (* Display 256×192 black buff *)

FOR i=0 TO 50
FOR j=0 TO 50
PRINT CHR$(24);CHR$(i);CHR$(j);
NEXT J
NEXT I

FOR i=0 TO 100
NEXT i
PRINT CHR$(14); \ (* Display alpha screen *)

It always stops at “PRINT CHR$(24);CHR$(10);CHR$(19);” through the loop with an
ERROR #246 for some reason. If I start the loop with i=10 and j=19 then it
appears to first draw a circle and then clear the graphics screen. I’m going to
have to play with this some more and find out what’s going on. It should work,
but for some reason it’s not.

If you go back to about a year ago, (july 86 Rainbow) you will find the
CoCo (Color Computer) Mouse program. This program has an option for the
Radio Shack Hi-Res interface. At this time, there is not much software out
there for this interface on the color computer 1/2 systems. But OS-9 level
two and the Color Max 3 both have drivers to use this interface.
I hope this helps.

The Delphi computer doesn’t like filenames with spaces, for some reason. Some
terminal programs are the same way.. they just quit parsing the filename when
they encounter a space. I’ll fix the name for you… how’s CDTANDY.MGE
sound to ya?

I
have followed the directions specifically and all I get is the normal display
of Greg Millers conversion of the ST graphics. In looking at the bosic program
I see no use of the PATCH program thou you note it must be on the disk. I
tried inserting a line 45 to overload the ST2CC3 program in case the PATCH is a
patch for that but got the same results.
A thousand pardons, Rich… I sorta goofed.

What I MEANT to say was that a new version of * RTTY * would be
coming soon to Delphi. In about a couple of months I expect
to post an upgraded version of the RTTY program that now allows
for send and receive at various different frequencies,
and allows you to sent out files that you prepared on
on a word processor, and save received text to disk.

Sure! No problem. I just unARCed the files and re-uploaded them,
that’s all.

COCO3KID, I think, will upload two or more regroupings of the fonts
so that others can get them. Let’s see, two files oughta do it. That
would make each file about 30K, which should fit in most buffers.

By the way, the newer, smaller files will contain the SAME fonts as are
online now, so you won’t need to download them. (I’ll probably make them
a part of the existing grouping just to keep all of the files in one place.

Jerry,

Hang loose for a coupla days and we’ll have that fixed up. All of the
fonts will be available as either (1) individual files, or (2) groups
of fonts that will fit in your buffer. They’re on the way!

Yes, there are a few terminal programs around that allow direct-to-disk
downloading, and that’s what I used to download that humongous file. It took
about 20 minutes at 1200 bps.

Anyway, we’ll have that squared away in just a while, OK?

the “.mge” extension means that it is a picture for Color Max 3. (if you never
heard of color max 3 … it’s like coco max 2 on a coco 3 screen. i never saw it
but it’s supposed to be exelect!!). You can view these pictures either if you
have color max 3, or youcan get the program called “gallary.bin” in the
graphics database. with gala
oops –> With gallary.bin, you can floadf. (oops, i meant load). you can
load “.mge” pictures and view them on your coco 3. I suggest you
get gallary.bin. those “.mge” pictures are REALY GREAT!!

The current version of McPaint that is online here will work without
modification on a CoCo 3. McPaint was written to run on the old machine.
Color Max is a totally different product, and runs on the CoCo 3 taking
advantage of the new machine’s graphics capabilities.

I SEE I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE TO GET THE IDEA ! , I WENT THRU THAT AND FOUND THAT
MARTY’S PROGRAM WAS WRITTEN TO XFER TEXT FILES , SO HE DOES A BIT OF FORMATTING
, THE CHARACTERS ARE ASCIIFIED BY DOING A ANDA #$7F AND LINE FEED REPLACED WITH
NULLS . TO FIX
THIS , JUST LIST THE PROGRAM .
AAT ONE POINT YOU’LL NOTICE A WHOLE BUNCHA POKES WITH THE CORRESPONDING CODE AT
THE END OF THE LINE AS COMMMENTS . (BLESS MARTY FOR DOING THAT !) YOU ONLY NEED
TO CCHANGE THE AANDA #$7F IN LINE 44 (I THINK ) TO NOPS (&H12) AND THE
CLRA IN THE PREVIOUS LINE TO A NOP ALSO .

HAVE FUN !

DAVE,

. It’s a FANTASTIC, UNBELIEVE-ABLE, program…….
. My hat’s off to Greg Miller & Erick Gavriluk!
. I have uploaded a couple of pictures that my older son, Michael & I drew
with serveral more going to RAINBOW’s Gallery.
By the way, have you tried some of the MGE format pictures yet?
You can use Greg Miller’s “GALLERY.BIN” to load & view on your CoCo 3.

Color Max 3 is an excellent product. Not perfect..
It has a nunmber of limitations, but overall is well worth the price.

It presently is the ONLY useable commercial draw program
on the CoCo 3, and is most respectable.

I’m glad you’re going to try doing some of your own drawing, Eric. After
you do a few, maybe you’ll appreciate the enormous amount of time it takes
to do good drawings. Even for experienced artists, getting the picture
“right” can take DAYS. After you’ve had firsthand experience at this, maybe
you won’t mind paying someone $2 per picture…

Anyway, it seems a bit one-sided to compare PMODE 4 graphics to the
hi-res screens on the CoCo 3, doesn’t it? I mean, if you were to be fair,
you’d be willing to compare apples and apples, wouldn’t you?

I strongly suspect the problem MAY be that Microillustrator
boots up under a built in OS9 Level 1 Ver 1.0 or Ver 1.1 shell.
Now, OS9 Level 1 ver 1.0 or ver 1.1 simply can’t boot on
a Coco 3 because it tramples over the interrupt vectors
in high memory. This is the problem with DL Logo and with
Trivia Fever. The solution is to boot up OS9 Level 1 ver 2.0
and then start up Microillustrator in that environment.

I’ve seen many of Linda Neilson’s pictures, and personally
find them quite excellent, and not lousey at all.
After years of personal and business dealings with the
Neilsons (who ARE Moreton Bay Software) I am rather certain
that if you are dissatisfied with their product, they
will take it back. If they are hesitant to do so,
perhaps it is because they fear it might be pirated.
I’m sure you could understand THAT concern, eh?

Yes, but there are some stores that sell
only software, not any hardware (except blank
diskettes maybe). These places might sell Coco
SW if there was enough demand.
BTW, more than one SW retailer has told me that
the publishers of CoCo software insist on
BIG wholesale orders, like $1000 or so at a time,
and this is why little retail shops won’t touch
the stuff.

Hmm. If you see that strangeness with file saving, in compressed format,
on another disk, again – let me know (I’ll talk you into sending
me the darned disk)… Huh? The arrow overlaps the characters? Hahaha..
I suppose I should’ve thought of that. Ah well, trivial. I’ll add that to
the list of next revisions… To be honest, we’ve found two or three
little idiosynchrosies like that, which are totally harmless, but best
described by “little quirks”.
(Oh, yeah.. I got that 8 character fname & extension thingy on ST2CC3)
– Greg

The 640 by 200 screen is not very useful because

(1) it is limited to a maximum palette of 4 colors

and

(2) The aspect ratio of the pixels is rather bad for
general purpose graphics.

Thus, the 320 by 200 mode is the higest resolution mode
that is of any real use on the CoCo for general purpose
graphics.

The authors of Color Max 3 wisely recognized this fact.

I hate to toot my own horn, but…
Color Max 3 is a CoCo 3 graphic editor designed and written by Erik Gavriluk
and myself. It’s designed for a 128K CoCo 3, with at least one drive. You
can use either a composite or RGB monitor (TV’s are fine) with it, and it’s
designed around a Mac-type environment. It’s available for $59.95 (with a
screendump), or $54.95 (w/o a dump), from:
Computize, Inc.
P.O. Box 207
Langhorne, PA 19047
(215)-946-7260

I just purchased Color Max 3 and wanted to tell you that it’s the best
Coco program I have seen to date. You guys did a great job.
I also wanted to report a minor bug/feature. When you have something
in the EDIT box it’s possible to overlay the Icons. I don’t think
that it’s serious, I’ll just be careful, but I wanted you to know
about it for future releases. Thanks again for a great program and
you’re welcome for the money.

Mark

Alan,
Well – as one of the authors of McPaint, I can say that we never released an
updated copy for the CoCo 3. However, both Erik and I have written another
graphic editor.. This time for the CoCo 3. “Colormax 3″ is available from
Computize, Inc.
P.O. Box 207
Langhorne, PA 19047
at a cost of $59.95, for a copy that includes a printer driver.

Bob,
Noticed another problem with Garfield & Odie. Get
some color spillage. First Garfie’s orange spills
into the background, then his fishing pole is
colored out. The upper background winds up orange
(same as Garfie), & Garfie is part tan (spillage
from lower background). I’ll try another DL, but I
used Xmodem, so it’s possible the problem is in
the file.

Please tell me how I can purchase the Color Max 3 program. I learned
from messages here that it is available from Computize, but I didn’t find
them listed in the Rainbow advertisers index.
Color Max 3 is available from Computize, exclusively. Price is about
$60, if I remember right.

As good as you are with drawing, you’ll l-o-v-e it!

It requires one joystick and a Tandy Hi-res Interface Unit… about $10 at
your nearest Radio Shack.

I FOUND , WHILE USING THE BRUSH THAT I COULD NOT ACCESS THE RIGHT MOST AND
LEFTMOST PIXEL . BY FURTHER INVESTIGATING I FOUND THAT THIS IS DUE TO THE FACT
THAT THE BRUSH IS CONSIDERED 1 BYTE WIDE AND CANNOT MOVE FARTHER LEFT OR RIGHT
THEN THE
BYTE BOUNDARIE . SO IF I HAD A BRUSH DEFINED AS BEING THE RIGHT MOST PIXEL , I
COULD ACCESS THE RIGHT BORDER PIXEL BUT I’D MISS THE 7 LEFTMOST ONES !

ONE LAST THOUGH , IF YOU WANT THE ‘MGE’ FORMAT TO CATCH ON , YOU SHOULD
CONSIDER RELEASING SOME CONVERSION PROGRAM FROM OTHER FORMATS AVAILABLE AS WELL
AS A VIEWING /SAVE UTILITY THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE COLORMAX .

THERE IS A FILE IN THE DL THAT DESCRIBES A WAY TO DO IT BY SIMPLY LOADING THEN
RESAVING THE COCOMAX.SYS FILE .. THAT WILL BOOT IT BUT YOU ALSO NEED TO DO A
POKE WHICH WAS POSTED HERE A WHILE BACK AND IS POSSIBLY ALSO IN THE DL . YOU DO
>>>>>>>NOT< <<<<<<
NEED THE PAL MOD AT LEAST IN MY CASE (MY MPI DOES NOT GGHOST ,, I HAVE A LATE
LARGE WHITE CASED ONE) AND I SUSPECT OTHERS MAY WORK FINE TOO .

SOM SAY IT DOESN’T WORK BECAUSE OF ADDRESS CONFLICT BUT IT’S CRAP , THE
ADDRESS AT WHICH IT SITS IS IN TTHE MIDDLE OF THE GIME ADDRESSES , TRUE
>>>>>BUT< << IT'S A WRITE ONLY ADDRESS , SO IF YOU READ THE COCOMAX PACK IT WILL
RETURN THE PROPER VALUE .
Y IF YOU ARE IN 32 COLUMN MODE BUT IT WILL MANGLE IT SEVERELY IN THE HIGH RES
TEXT AND GRAPHIC MODES .

TRY IT BEFORE BUYING ANYTHING . AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU FIND THAT POKE NECESSARY
FOR THE STRETCH FUNCTION .

Any picture with an extension of “PIX” or “MAX” is actually a BASIC program
that can be downloaded, then loaded and run. It will then recreate the
hi-res picture for you. Simple, huh?

And then there is always the jury-rigged expedient of just using your
favorite text editor to edit out the useless trash after your download
has been saved to disk. BASIC croaks on the first “DS” error, so if
you can even just get the first lines cut out so that it manages to
get to the BASIC statements before it dies, you usually make out all right.
So what if it barfs on the trash at the end?

I assume that you don’t have X-modem
since you get the cursor responses
mixed in with the program..I would
suggest that you get Mikeyterm or
Greg-E-term by contacting Mike Ward
or Greg Miller.
(since those programs have the
X-modem protocol)
-Derrick Kardos

Is it possible to download a COCO3 picture from the Graphics database and
make it work on the COCO2? I have noticed that most of the pictures are
digitized and if the COCO3 pictures are digitized, I thought it shouldn’t
make much difference. I was also wondering, since reading the new RAINBOW,
if I were to send you one of my adventures for entry in the next adventure
contest, and you can’t run it on disk unless you DON’T have a protection
tab on, you had it that you should put it on. THE REASON IS IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO SAVE OFF THE
PICTURE
IN STD(?) IN
DEMOING SOME OF THE GRAPHICS TO GROUPS AT OUR MOTOROLA COLOR COMPUTER CLUB THE
COMMENTS HAVE
BEEN ABOUT THE SLOWNESS OF THE SYSTEM SO I HAVE BEEN ASKED TO REDO SOME TO THE
GRAPHICS WITH A SLIDE SHOW DEMO. EVERYTHING IS OK SO FAR EXCEPT THE INABILITY
TO DEMO THE ST GRAPHICS CONVERTED WITH YOUR PROGRAM. ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE
WOULD BE AP
PRECIATED. THANKS JERRRY GREINER

ERIK,

I have a printer dump called RSDUMP.DRV which I am trying to
convert to EPSON. (I can’t get either Epson driver from the
graphics base to work.) I’m having trouble understanding one
part of RSDUMP. If I am correct, at about $0440 you move 4 bits
from the picture into register B. Then $0450 you set up some
kind of offset based on those four bits and a rather odd collect
ion of $E? values with LDA B,Y. What on earth is going on here?
seems to me you’d just send the bits to the printer.

Also is appears that you have a printer setup routine after the
data send. (setup at $046C, send at $0452). I think the EPSON
requires the setup BEFORE the data is sent. I tried moving the
setup before the loop at $042A. It seems to change the PMODE,
squeezing the picture into the top half of the screen.

I have an EPSON RX-80. Any tips you could give would be appreciated. I have
your interfacing instructions – just nothing to
interface. Maybe I’ll have to start from scratch even tho I’m
not really an assembly programmer.

  Oh, OK! Now I unnerstand!

Ya see, here on DELPHI you’re talking to a mainframe with 2-1000 other
users. The more users, the slower the system response. With a BBS,
you’re talking micro-to-micro, and you have the undivided attention of
the remote computer! But on DELPHI and other networks, you have to “share”
with others!

So, the response time you observed was pretty “normal”… in fact, you
were doing pretty OK, really.

In the future, please upload COCOMAX pictures in compressed (MAXCMP’ed)
format – NOT in binary form. This makes it possible for a wider variety
of users to have access to your pictures… and the SIG standards also
call for ASCII files wherever possible.

As it was, I had to download all of your files, convert them, and then
re-upload them… a 2-hour pain. As fast as this SIG is growing, we won’t
be able to do this type of thing much longer. Please use MAXCMP for your
future uploads.

    Thanks,

     Don

I may have made an error… or used a copy of a prototype pre
production release ROM.

I’m delighted to hear you liked the fonts.

Do check out the Palo Alto and Macintosh (Woodhaven) fonts
that are also available in the graphics section. You will
like them.

Dear Rainbow,

I have been an avid reader of your Mag. from day one when it was
only a few photo-copied pages. I recommend your Mag. to each new
CoCo Owner I run across on the BBS I run. Till today I never had
any complaint about how your Mag. was run/published/printed/etc.
But I think there is N O W one thing wrong with it. A small thing
but a very important one…
The ART Gallery that is in the Mag. is starting to >lean< towards
favoring the CoCo 3 pics that are being sent into your Mag.
While I think all the winners that were CC3 pix were very good. I don’t
think they are in the same league as the past CC1 and CC2 pix that were
in your Gallery…My suggestion is that you have two Galleries. One for
CC1/CC2/CC3 Pmode 4 type pix…and one for the CC3 Hscreen type pix.
The way the galley is setup now. A CC1/CC2 Pmode 4 type pix does not
stand much chance of winning against a decent CC3 Hscreen type pix.
Give the folks who have not gotten a CC3 yet a chance to still win with
their art…cause as the Galley stands now it is like comparing apples/
oranges against each other. Both can be good…but they aren’t the
same and neither should be better than the other…
Bob Montowski (Graphicspub)

Note: Of course, I refer to the raw data in your file,
when I said “transfer the file”. You can’t just transfer
the ML program type file you uploaded directly..
you’d first have to trim off the RS DOS 5 byte header and
footer that are part of the ML program load, end, and execute
adr specs on that file.

Actually, I don’t have a copy of OS9 Level II either.
But I do know the exact form for the text font
files on OS9 Level II. These basically involve
adding an 11 byte header to the 8 by 8 (or 8 by 6 or 16 by 16)
matrix graphics data. For example, in the case of the files
you uploaded, one would merely add the appropriate 11 byte
header in front of it (to specify it was an 8 by 8 font,
and to specify how many characters it contained… this
is all part of that 11 byte header), and then transfer taht
file to OS9 byte for byte. Bingo! One font file.

I was trying to say that what you see when you type
PRINT MEM in BASIC in *no* way reflects the real available
memory in your computer. A 32K CoCo 1, a 64K Coco 2, or
a 512K Coco 3 will ALL yeild the same amount of available
memory under Microsoft Basic

That printer driver *should* work just fine. Do you know where you ot
the copy of it that you have? Did a friend give it to you, or was it
downloaded? If a friend gave it to you, then most likely it is from a
stockpile of disks from “The Public Domain Software Copying Company”,
a group of fascist commie pinko slimes who have not only been selling
copies of our program without our permission, but are also distributing
screwed-up copies as well. Their new ad even uses our name “The Milliluk
Partnership… turn your CoCo into a Mac…”. They are also not
distributing the docs with the program.

If you’d like a copy of McPaint, with nice, printed docs, which were
professionally typeset, send $15 (or more) to:

I’m afraid that the CTRL key cannot be simply made into the
ADOS control key, due to the
difficulty in suppressing the
equals sign that the CTRL key
produces under Basic. (However,
the CTRL key is the control key
in the forthcoming ADOS-3 for
the CoCo 3.) I could tell you a couple of pokes to make the
F2 key the control key, but that
in my opinion is no better than
leaving it as the down arrow.

This is becoming a rather touchy matter here. I did not deny that it
could be something in my code, as I mentioned that I’d check it out.
And if I should feel the urge to do so, I will check it out.

I would not look foolish at all if it was something in my program.
I am a human being, contrary to public belief, and do make mistakes.
You are the one who might look foolish if it turns out to be *your*
hardware, as you were the one who started jumping up and down repeating
the word “careless”. Might I recommend carefree, nonchalant, casual,
negligent, thoughtless, inattentive, unobservant, unthinking, slack,
slovenly, reckless, rash, indiscreet, or imprudent in future discussions.

Might I also point out that I will not make a cent off of this Mac
convertor.

Might I also point out that over three years of writing software for
the public, consisting of a half-dozen programs and two Rainbow articles,
has netted me well under $300.

And the Mac convertor works just fine on my end, so it really doesn’t
matter to me whether it works for you or not.
Neat, huh? I can load any Mac picture I like. Na na na na na na!

– Erik
