- Your name and address;

- The days and hours that your system is in operation;

- The parameters used (baud rate/rates, 7 or 8 bits, and parity) to connect to

Has Clearbrook Software’s IMS database been reviewed? In its multiuser form?
Is it compatible with DYNACALC and/or word processors?

I have ordered a reprint of Feb 86 to get the modified printer driver for
COOCCAD, but you mention that it may be in the d/b… Do you know if it was in
fact put there and if so, under what topic and title? Reprints take soooo
long, it would be great to b
e able to down load it.

I have a TRS-80 printer.
It has the model no of 775, This is the only thing that tells what it is.
I think that it is one of the real early printers.
It has a grey case, big and heavy.
It has a centronics only port.
My quetion is can anyone tell me if this is worth fixing, it does not work.
Can I get parts for it?

The one-time $3.50 surcharge is for all files in that group. You pay only
$3.50 surcharge even though you may download several files in that group.

Roger Schrag’s EDTASM patches (there were two) appeared in the April 1983
Rainbow (Page 193) and in the September 1983 issue (Page 66), the latter
being called Superpatch for EDTASM.

Just a quick explanation about how surcharges apply for the Rainbow On Tape
and Rainbow On Disk files:

When you download surcharged files such as the ones in the Rainbow On Tape
topic of the database, the $3.50 surcharge is only charged to your account
once **as long as you stay in the grouping**. You may download all of the
files, or only a couple of the files, or you can download one file for a
hundred times – you’ll only get charged one $3.50 surcharge fee **as long as
you stay in that grouping**. (Plus normal connect time charges, of course.)

The EDTASM patches you’re looking for appeared in the September ’83
issue of RAINBOW, and you can find them in the RAINBOW topic of the
database by typing READ 9/83 66. That’s READ 9/86 66.

Well, I certainly did not intend to open up a can of worms by debating
whether copy protection is a good idea or not. Obviuously most users do not
favor it. I can understand the valid points that were brought up.
However I just was looking for some information on who offers the service
of compiling a program and copy protecting it. Has anybody heard of a
company that offers this service?

Any information would be appreciated. The compiler programs that I have
spent alot of money on do not seem to be fully “COCO III basic compatable”.

I have just produced a program on the COCO III that I would like to
market. I am looking for advice/information on how I can compile and
copy-protect the program. I have purchased several compilers that don’t
seem to be fully compatable with basic, and offer no copy protection
schemes. Is anybody aware of a company that will take a CoCO III Basic
program, compile it, then produce copy protected disks? Any help would be
appreciated.

“,” in it, it did not work and when he took it out, it did work. Should it

I hope you can help me! I found and old issue
of RAINBOW (September 1985) and was reading
the “Turn Of The Screw” column about adding
led’s to the pia chip. The only problem is
I can’t find it. I have a coco II that came
with 16k and ECB. I think it’s the american
version. Does ic2 = u2 on my board? because
all the chips on my board are numbered with
u’s, and u17 is a memory chip.

I have another question…
How many led’s will the coco supply power
for. What I want to do just for fun to see
what the CPU is doing I want to put a led on every
pin of the CPU to see which ones are active.
I don’t know if I could do that.

First I’d like to thank you for the calendar program, but did you get a chance
to loat the program as printed in the Rainbow?
I’m still trying to program in BASIC and I don’t understand why there are three
else’s together in line 140, and why in lines 180,200,320 there is an IFBD THEN
BD or something similar.As printed the program works unless you ask to print
** on the 17th of August then it doesn’t want to do it.Any help would be
appreciated, thanks.

Your terminal software must support xmodem protocol. If it does, the
documentation will tell you how to download with xmodem. (i.e. what control
keys or whatever).
When you get the prompt ’3 ctrl-C’s…’ you must call your program’s xmodem
routine, and then IT will start the download.

If that makes any sense.

Block Grafics are NOT standard… they vary considerably
from machine to machine. The printable characters
are limited to the 94 characters (I exclude the space and delete char)
between $20 and $7F. While some computers do put stuff on the screen
for the characters between $1 and $1F and between $7F and $FF, the
stuff they put there is totally specific to that particular
machine.

There is one exception…

the particular characters used by IBM in its character generator
has become a kind of international standard of its own..
“IBM Character Standard”.

This standard includes the normal standard ASCII characters,
but also includes gobs of vaguely Block Graphics like characters.
It really is the only “standard” that relates to
stuff outside the normal printed letters and punctuation
symbols that lie between $20 and $7F. And of course
Tandy on the CoCo utterly ignores this standard.

Most of us who write “for hire” are aware that the copyright for our material,
unless specifically arranged otherwise, is the property of the publisher.

Thus, anything I write for Rainbow is Rainbow’s. If, for instance, someone
wanted to reproduce my column; they would have to make arrangements with
Rainbow, not me — although they would likely ask my permission as well, just
to be pleasant. In a similar vein, if my column was reproduced without
permission, I could not sue for copyright infringement, but Rainbow could.
Since Rainbow owns the copyright, only Rainbow is deemed damaged by the
courts.

So, as for reviews, yes, Rainbow has all rights to reviews appearing in the
Rainbow and you cannot market a review your wrote for us. We can. Of course,
there is nothing to prevent you from writing another review!

On occasion, those who get “rave” reviews request the right to reproduce the
Rainbow review. To secure those rights, they contact us, not the author.

Actually, he isn’t on that often and I don’t believe you’re going to persuade
him to have a RAINBOWfest in Boston.

It is gratifying to know so many people would like to host a RAINBOWfest in
so many different cities. As I have said many times (and only partly in jest),
I wish we could hit the road and stop at every town from Augusta to Seattle.

Well,

Undeniably, Rainbow is smaller. Too reasons. It is always smaller in summer,
for one. And, secondly, many advertisers have withdrawn from the market
because of maturation of market and other factors.

Certainly, the advent of the CoCo 3 will breathe new life into the CoCo
Community, so have no fears for the future.

Just for the record, Rainbow itself is very healthy and remains the flagship
publication for Falsoft, which produces three computer magazines and a sports
weekly as well as occasional books. Rainbow will NOT follow the paths of some
other CoCo magazines; it was Rainbow’s firm grip on the CoCo market that made
it difficult for the others to make it. We plan to be around a long time.
It would be difficult for me to prove this without just opening up our books
to the public (which we have no intention of), but you’ll just have to take my
word for it that Rainbow is just fine, thank you. I do very much appreciate
your concern, but please rest assured that we are in for the long haul.

P.S. A lot of folks don’t realize that the number of articles and programs
published in most any magazine is directly related to number of ads running.
In the business, you talk about the editorial/advertising “mix” and try to
maintain a fixed ratio of editorial to advertising space. You see, no magazine
can make it on the subscriptions; advertising revenue is the key. So, if ads
are down, the magazine shrinks; if ads increase, so does the magazine size.
Certainly, we have a wealth of material to fill the magazine.

In a given series of programs (called a group on Delphi), you are only
surcharged once if you download any file from the group. This means that, when
you enter the group, you can download as many of the programs in that group as
many times as you want. When you leave the group, however, if you have
downloaded one or more files, you are charged $3.50 one time.

I continue to think how silly it is that people *constantly* keep making polls
that always read “Who would like a Rainbowfest in (my home town)?” where (my
home town) is replaced by the home town of the creator of the poll.

Some people are clever enough to pick the biggest city within driving distance,
that explains why we have not yet seen “Let’s a have a Rainbowfest in
Howard, South Dakota” by now.

The Rainbow staff have repeatedly made their position clear on this matter…
I’d point you toward the essay by LFALK in the General database in particular.

Especially when you consider that you are within 4 hours of the
New Jersey Rainbowfest, a separate Baltimore ‘fest doesn’t sound
too likely.

(BTW, I voted yes, but did throw in that Baltimoron comment).

As I’ve often said (only half in jest), it would suit me fine if we got an
18-wheeler, a revival tent and hit the open road, carrying RAINBOWfest to
every state in the Union, and every province in Canada, too.
Or, even a “Big eight-wheeler” locomotive that pulled us through the
whistlestops and we sell hardware and software out the windows of the Rainbow
train.
Lonnie Falk makes the ultimate decision, though, so you need to persuade
him (Buffalo him?).
Several spots seem to be naturals: Atlanta, Boston, yeah maybe Buffalo.
But, I seriously doubt Lonnie is going to veer from present schedule.
Maybe you could organize a charter bus to Princeton. A Rainbow or bust
special, so to speak.
I think I’d enjoy something like that myself. Just a thought.
Many folks speak of the many attractions of their cities and we’d really
and truly like to visit them all, but I would not want to give you any
false encouragement, because the many factors taken into consideration
suggest to me that new locations are very unlikely to be added.

I’ve installed 27128 EPROMs in nearly every model of RS and
third party Coco contorller ever made. It is
a trivial matterof rerouting the address lines, adding an A13 line,
and of course providing a 28 pin socket. On most of the newer
third party controllers (J&M, HDS, and Disto) it is easier still..
those COME with sockets that are 28 pin type and are all set to accept
a 27128. I have never had a problem in any of the eight or so
different kinds of controller I have installed such chips in.
If you get extended BASIC when you power up, that means that your
CoCo literally is NOT seeing the EPROM, or not seeing it
correctly, for itmeans it is NOT reading the first two bytes
of the EPROM (which should be the ASCII chars “DK”) correctly.

Go into BASIC and Peek the contents of locations $C000 and $C001. See what is
there.

Then carefully recheck your wiring. Then make sure you burned the EPROM
properly.
Tony in that article provides excellent reference material regarding
the pin outs of the ordinary Tandy ROM vs the 27128 chip.
His suggested method of installation, however, is rather crude and
poorly done. My method is more cmplex, but far cleaner, for when
I am done I have an ordinary 28 pin socket installed in the controller.
None of this nonsense of soldering an EPROM to another chip or to
a carrier. My technique involves desoldering the 24 pin socket from
the controller and using a 28 pin AUGAT style socket in its place…
a speciall prepared 28 pin socket with part of the pins clipped
from the upper 4 holes on it.

What results is a product that looks like it came out of the facotry
that way… no ugly piggy backs… and one can pop in or out
any noraml 2764 or 27128 chip at will.

But to get back to your question… you could have made an error
in any of a number of places. So carefully check out all possibliities.
Make sure you burned the EPROM correctly. make sure you wired up
whatever sort of adaptor you have there correctly. If the comuter
runs at all you probably do NOT have a pin to pin short.

Patience! You’ll get it working eventually.

With a LITTLE luck, the powers that be will have that
stuff installed by the time you are ready to upload yer review.
The changes should overall facilitate my start of an upload
of several MEGABYTES worth of interesting files I’ve accumulated
over the years… some of them NEVER before made public!
Also, I will when the changes are made (with help from
Cray and other able folks) clear out our backlog of
pending submissions… and from there on try to keep
time from submission to enabling in public down to
under 2 days. Hopefully less even than that, eventually.

Oh, a second message….
I am using MTERM 4 (I also tried 2.5)
with the Multi-Pak, RS-232 pak, and a
Volksmodem 1200 smartmodem. The modem
only has 5 pins hooked up, CD, TXD,RXD
GND and DTR. Nothing else is hooked up.

Jim, I would like to know if reprints of back articles or issues from RAINBOW
are available.

I am particularly interested in Colin Stearmans series Cooking with CoCo from
1984. I recently upgraded to disk and have ordered his patch program but
reading the articles would be a help I think.

I have tried our local libraries but none have those issues. Please advise.

By the way, I think this SIG is a great success and I have learned much in just
two months. Maybe later I will understand more of the messages. Marty Goodman
comes across as so intense – I wonder if he dreams in color?

You are doing a good job of modulating the language on the FORUM. How do you
guys control someone who is obviously without redeeming social value? (My kids

Hi CP : I saw in a message that you was intersted in R.S. Deskmate.
Yes is does use the RS232 pac. I thought I would point out some facts to you
that you might no
t know.
Deskmate will only download and upload ASCII files . And if that isn’t bad
enough when you save them to disk they will be in OS9 format
Tandy once again thinks the COCO only needs to DL ASCII and doesn’t need any
form of error checking , error corectinh protical.
I will also offer some of my opinions on Deskmate . First it will never be worth
)
99 bucks. I don’t think any all-in-one program will ever be 30% as good as the
stand alone programs.
Mikyterm , CIS vidtex, ColorConnection III and Autoterm are all 10 times better
then the Terminpart of Deskmate. Coco Max and Grapicom are 10 times better then
the Graphic part. Telewriter and Vip writer is better then the Word
p.
One last thought Deskmate is 32 columns a line. Tandy should be shot in my
opinion for even asking 99 bucks for this. BTW if you really want a terminal
program that runs under
OS-9 give Oterm a look. I have never used it, but I know a lot of the OS-9
folks that love it.

WAS IN SLOT #4.

ALSO, MUCH THE SAME PROBLEM

it, how to write it, advanced parsing, even (must I say it- I’m am
Infocomite)graphics– as well solving and playing them, sample games totype in
, the latest news (such as the “thrilling” news, as I consider it, about
Infocom’s releases for the Coco. Etc., etc., etc. You seriously could do some
neat things in this column- I can give you many more suggestions…

As a check on things, I have a production copy delivered to my home address.
That copy came in mail yesterday. So, give it a couple of days.
Incidentally, beginning with the January Rainbow On Tape, production will
take place in the Rainbow’s new office building rather than in Michigan.

Since my Rainbow subscription started in April I missed the info about WEFAX
Broadcasts. I have a program for it, but I need what frequencies are
braodcasted etc.

DELPHI THE NORMAL WAY WITH AND AFTER
THERE MENU COMES UP THEN I SWITCHED PARITY TO OFF. RESPONCE TIME IS NOW VERY
FAST FROM DELPHI. I USE AUTOTERM 3.2D
STOP BIT 1. SEND 8 BITS AT A TIME. LET ME KNOW IF IT WORKS OR IF I CAN HELP ANY

I was also a regular on CompuServe as you probably know until recently. I had
just moved and notified them two weeks prior to my move that I was closing out
my current bank account and then a few days later I gave them the new account
info. They didn’t listen at all and tried my old account twice and then sent
me a bill and said pay within 15 days or else and if you want back in to send
a $10 reconnection fee. I told them that if they had that attitude then there
was no way I’d get back in, never. They can take their whole system and shove
it where the sun don’t shine! Have you got you latest newbx’s up here yet? I’ve
got newbx and nwbx1 and want the rest as you did a very fine job on them. Very
good indeed! I also have the erratic echo problem on Tymnet and when I had
Uninet it happened there, but much worse. I see that they just ironed out the
double backspace problem as it seems to be working fine. If I figure out how
to edit I’ll let you know so everyone doesn’t have to look at fouled up
messages. I do know that if you haven’t hit CR yet you can backspace to make
the corrections but after that I’m lost.

We did a Rainbowfest in Ft. Worth a couple of years ago and it was
not very successful. In fact, it was by far the smallest we’ve
ever had.

Doubt we will return. If, for no other reason, because I think it
would be next to impossible to attract exhibitors there after the
first one.
