Hi, newbie here and i warn you my english is not so good.

I tried to reply to this post, but i think im too late:

http://www.coco3.com/community/2008/04/gates-of-delirium-2

I played that game when i was around 15 and i solved it by luck i guess because i had no clue what i was doing, i had the game without docs by a friend and had to discover all by myself.

I really enjoyed playing that game and solved it by the fourth try.
It well over 20 years ago so i will try to remember the best i can. I agree the dungeon to the south with invisible stuff is a major turn off, its almost impossible to solve it. At the second attempt to ther game, i was going good but teleported into a squeletton in the small island and the game was over, it took me too much time to get there and the world was ”overpopulated” so it had to happen i guess.

I think the best way to solve the game is create your character as the barbarian with maximum strenght and dexterity. Dont choose fancy magic user; the game is too hard and is based on fighting.
Only use bows (the first affodable and next the better one) for your caracter, zanzibar and sheenan i think. So when you fight, the three bow user stays close together in place and the others wait behind for hand to hand combat wich take time and you can protect theses caracters this way (gazer, merlin and ?).

Like Ricojack said, map the dungeons and then reload to go straight to the ladders or fountains. A small square for each level where you note in it the aproximate location of ladders for each level was enough. Instead of pay for curing and healing, return to the dungeons with the fountains this way you save money.

Before leaving the first world (when everybody is maxed and you got the best weapons), do youself a favor and clean every city and castles. I did kill everybody (yes i had some remorse, but…) the kings, the guards, then everybody around, pick the money and finally steal all you can in peace without being disturbed. Purchase ALOT of foods and torch and you are ready to go into the super dungeon. There is shrines at the second world, but i didnt saw the need for it, its kind of too late, they sould have been around in the first world, it would have been much easier and logical.

I remember it was a blast to play because it was a ”fast” game.
Later i purchased the excellent and beautiful game the seventh link but didnt have the time to solve it. I had big trouble in the dungeons, and it was really time consuming and didnt solve any of them and gets gradually discouraged.

Thanks

Hello all,
I have a SD Drive Pak. I have been unable to get either of these programs to work (both disk images obtained from the Coco Software Repository). I transferred them to the SD card using the Coco PAK program.
Pitstop 2 shows as *.BAS and on running crashes and the top half of the screen is jumbled and it freezes.
Pitfall 2 is a BIN file – the loader screen appears, but it shows Disk Read Error following a memory check.
I have been trying to run both on a 128k Coco 3.
I am really keen to have a go on these on the real hardware. I would appreciate it if a fellow user could enlighten me if I am doing something wrong or if somebody could email me a disk image that works ok, or if a CAS file could be obtained that I could load in using Cocotape.

Cheers

The Interbank Incident!

Background
My introduction to personal computing was in the 80’s with the venerable old Color Computer. One of the most intriguing games for the CoCo was a game called The Interbank Incident by Spectral Associates. It was a huge disk-based graphical adventure game that was completely driven with a point-and-click graphical user interface, something very new and unique for its time. I vividly remember this game and spent many hours of my youth playing it. I never did finish it, I’ve never found anyone anywhere who has beaten it, nor am I sure it even can be beaten. I’m starting this guide in the hope that others who are interested will contribute to a comprehensive walkthrough/solution. I’ve even made a partial map of all the locations I was able to get to on an Excel spreadsheet (just email me at nickbasargekar@yahoo.com if you want it).

My original disks and hardware are long gone. One evening, I was googling around randomly and stumbled into the wonderful world of CoCo emulation which brought back a wave of nostalgia for this little 8-bit machine and this game.

If you don’t have the original hardware, I personally recommend playing the game with the M.E.S.S. emulator. With the CoCo high-speed poke and the game installed on a .vhd hard disk image, the game load times are blazingly fast compared to what I remember on the original CoCo. The game also worked with the Tandy Speech/Sound Cartridge (you can read more about this device at http://tlindner.macmess.org/?page_id=96_). I remember this used to provide synthesized voices and some nice ambient sounds when playing the game. Unfortunately, this gizmo is also long gone, and its functionality is not reproduced in any emulator. There are some threads floating around about someone having attempted to write a driver that emulates it (check out http://www.coco3.com/community/2008/12/does-a-rom-image-of-he-tandy-speech-pak-exist) but that’s about it.

The Game
Ok, if you haven’t already, you are going to want to read through the game manual (you can find it at http://os9projects.com/CD_Archive/MANUALS/TANDY_OS9/GAMES/INTERBANK/Interbank.pdf). It contains the back-story to the game as well as instructions on how to use the point-and-click interface. I won’t repeat all that information here.

One of the things that makes this game so challenging is that locations of various objects and the clues you will need are very randomized each time you play a new game. I still wonder if the game sometimes starts in an unbeatable state because of a particular necessary items spawning in unreachable locations or catch-22 situations.

Also, certain characters have specific strengths and weaknesses. It seems that some are able to automatically get information from certain people or automatically able to access certain locations that other characters are not able to without performing certain actions. However, the game manual states that the game is winnable with any character.

In the game, you often get reoriented when moving from scene to scene so that going opposite the direction you came does not take you to the prior scene. When looking at my Excel map, bear in mind that the arrow indicates which direction you are facing in the scene.

For now, I’ll just outline the main things I was able to do in Seattle, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro as well as locations I wasn’t able to reach and stuff I wasn’t able to do.

Seattle
Stuff to do:
In the bookstore, you can buy a plumbing book which you can then give you Josephine at the Space Needle ticket counter for a clue.

You can give a sharp fisherman’s knife (randomly found in the game) to Mr. Cousteau at the fish counter inside Farmers Market in exchange for a useful item. You can also buy fish to eat from Mr. Cousteau.

You might need the metro transit to ride the ferry or the monorail depending on which character you are playing.

You need to buy a ticket from Josephine at the Space Needle ticket counter to go up to the Space Needle.

At the Seattle Center Monorail Terminal, you can find Angel Gartner. Her father, Hans Gartner, works at the Hoffbrau Haus in Munich. You can give him money in exchange for a bottle of scotch. You can give the bottle of scotch to Angel for a clue.

I have no idea how to get into the rustic old apartment building outside the Pike Place Market. Is there a way in? If you buy a drink from Achmed Bolli on the train from Paris to Munich, he might drop a key. This key unlocks the front door, but I still can’t get in. It could just be a glitch in the game.

To get past the guard shack into the Bremerton Naval Yard, you need to use a military hat which can be purchased at the Maison De in Paris.

In the Space Needle souvenir shop, I can’t get through the storage room door. There’s some kind of slot next to it which I don’t know what to do with.

Rio de Janeiro
You can use the poker chip (randomly found in the game) with the roulette table in the casino in Rio and win some money depending on which character you are playing.
In the cabin of the yacht, there’s a slot in the wall for something. I don’t know what to do with it. When I was a kid, I remember reading in The Rainbow Magazine that it was for a videotape. I’ve never encountered a videotape in the game.

I can’t get into the small apartment building next to the alley that leads to the beach.

Paris
In the lounge car of the train from Paris to Munich, you can find Achmed Bolli. If you buy a drink from him, he will drop something useful, hopefully the key to the baggage car. In the baggage car, you can find an invitation to a video game tournament. Give this to Achmed Bolli for a clue.

You might need the Eurail pass to ride the train from Paris to Munich depending on what character you are playing.

I can’t get into the storage room at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Munich
At the Hoffbrau Haus, if you give Hans Gartner some money, he might give you a bottle of scotch. You can give it to his daughter, Angel Gartner, who works at the Seattle Center Monorail Terminal. She will then give you a clue.

At a city street in the older part of Munich, you can see a manhole cover. I suspect there is something that can be used to pry it off.

To get past the airforce base guard booth in Munich, you cannot have the gun in your possession. Read the newspaper while at the guard booth. You will then be able to enter the R&D hangar of the airforce base. A random object will also appear.

I don’t know what to do in the airforce base R&D hangar.

		 The Vortex Factor Walkthrough
		===============================

This is the walkthrough for "The Vortex Factor" graphical adventure,
produced for the TRS-Color (Coco - Color Computer), distributed by
Mark Data Products.

The objective of the game is to find treasures and leave them
in a special room. Use the command "score" to see how well you
are doing.

You can type only the initial four letters of a word ("inve"
instead of "inventory") or the initials of some commands
(I, L, N, S, E, W, ...) to speed up typing. Use "get all" and
"drop all" to get/drop all objects.

Some deaths are rather random, so always save your progress!!!

I am putting together a map and partial walkthrough. For those of you playing the game, you might find them useful. Maybe you’ve also been able to figure out some things or get to places I couldn’t. If so, perhaps you can help me finish beat the game and finish the walkthrough.

Hello, folks,

I managed to download an old favorite — one which I never beat, in fact — the other day. I’m running a CoCo 2 via emulation since my CoCo 2 is across the Atlantic in the U.S! Not sure if I could even get it working anyway…

Well, I’ve been playing through Coco Zone for the first time in more than twenty years. I must be close to the end of the game: I swam across the river, retrieved the flashlight, headed for something that looks like a tunnel, and…

?SN ERROR IN 155
OK

What? Anybody have any ideas on how to handle this? It’s been a dream of mine since childhood to play through and finish this game. I’m not sure what the problem is, or how I’d even address it. I’m not sure I could edit line 155 if I wanted to — or even knew what to fix.

Advice?

All,

Does anyone remember the Avalon Hill games for the Coco? I can find AD references in my old collection of Rainbow magazines – Feb 1984 – Shootout at the OK galaxy, Midway Campaign, Voyager, V.C., and Breakthru. I’ve been able to also find some additional Rainbow info in the section Received & Certified for V.C. (Jan 1984) and Panzers East (Mar 1985).

I’ve been able to locate Voyager, Breakthru, and V.C. but just can’t seem to find Midway Campaign, Panzer East, or Shootout at the OK galaxy. Most of these should have come on cassette and would be ext color basic ‘CLOAD’ games. I’m looking for additional information from others that they either remember them or have seen them on the Coco before. I collect many of the old Avalon Hill games for TRS-80′s and don’t seem to find the Coco versions on the common auction sites. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

Having recently played Zaksund for the first time I can say I’m glad I didn’t get it “back in the day” as it is much cruder than the offical version of Zaxxon from Radio Shack. But if I’d gotten this first I’d have likely been satisfied until I saw the offical version.

Anyone own this when it was originally released? What was you opinion of it both before and after you saw the offical version?

Not sure if any of you have heard of hyperspin but its a cool frontend for emulators and has native support for MESS. I used to play with my coco as a kid and wanted to add as much support as I can to it.

I have a likely stupid question. Games on DSK images have to be loaded and then a company run CLOADM, EXEC, etc… but PAK images are bootable and this works well with the frontend. Can games be pulled from DSK images and converted into PAK files (or bin/cass)?

I’m also looking at trying to collect as many games that do work and adding this to the hyperspin community so I just purchased the CoCo Roundup DVD to get a good start. Any info would be appreciated

I had written a basic program a (very) long time ago to search the bin files and find the byte to patch. I have long since lost that program, but I decided to rewrite it since I have this problem again since hooking up my old Coco 3 again (my kids like to play the old games, they get a kick out of it). So here are the listings. It is two programs, the first patches the bin file (if it can find the spot). The second one sets the palette and loads the patched file. I want to sell them because I don’t know anyone that has one of these and I didn’t even know what they were at first. Could someone please tell me how much they’re worth so I don’t get completely screwed?

I’m looking for a working DSK image that has the game Froggie by Spectral Associates. A frogger clone. I have the game on a disk but it must be corrupt because when the game starts, the frogs graphics are messed up and it just dies repeatedly until the game is over.

If any one can point me to it on the internet with a link or send me a DSK via email. chazbeenhad at hotmail dot com.

I got a tape full of CoCo programs from my grandpa today. Most of them seem to be simple BASIC programs like you’d find in a magazine to enter yourself, but one of them struck me as different, as it takes quite a while to load.

I loaded it on to my CoCo 2, and ran it, and got a simple title screen that says “Success Manion – Press Any Key to Continue”.

Unfortunately, after I pressed the key, I got “The Adventure Begins…” followed immediately by “?OM Error In 3020″, which I gather means Out of Memory.

Has anyone played or heard of this game before? I tried a Google search on it, but didn’t really come up with anything, aside from a .DSK image that somehow referenced the name of the game (in an index, I guess) without actually containing the game.

I can try to load it on to my computer via my sound card if anyone wants to take a look at it. I suppose I could even extract the ASCII if I mess around with it in an emulator (it does look to be in BASIC). I don’t know if it’s actually too big, or if some programming error is causing it to try loading data into an address that doesn’t exist (I have 64k of RAM, by the way).

This game to this day is one of the most addictive and imaginative games ever, did anybody ever made a CoCo version of it? I do not mean Super Mario Bros but Super Mario the Sidescroller original top notch game with mushrooms that make him grow or throw fireballs etc. Was this game ever ported to the CoCo and if so where can it be obtained?

CoCoNet 1.02 beta
4-18-2010
www.coco3.com
e-mail Roger Taylor (operator@coco3.com) for suggestions, corrections, complaints, thanks, ideas, improvements, contributions, etc.

This is a very quick rough version of the “coming soon” PDF docs for the CoCoNet system, Drive Pak, and Deluxe Wireless RS-232 Pak products.

CoCoNet is a Disk BASIC 1.1 ROM replacement that does everything Disk BASIC already does and lots more. It is compatible with any CoCo that has Extended BASIC, and of course all CoCo 3′s.
However, you only need one ROM to boot with, so you’ll want to disable or remove any existing floppy controller ROMs, either using a Multi-Pak Interface or by putting tape over one of the pins on your floppy controller’s card edge.

“CoCoNet” is a system based around the CoCoNet/Disk BASIC ROM and one or more of these devices: a ROM pak, bitbanger cable, RS-232 Pak, Deluxe Wireless RS-232 Pak, Drive Pak, Floppy disk controller, MPI.

Install and run the CoCoNet server on your PC.
Install the *16K* CoCoNet EPROM in a pak or controller of your choice on your CoCo.

Here’s just a few things you can do using CoCoNet, some of which is automatic or done in a Plug and Play fashion.

- When you turn your CoCo on, CoCoNet will detect what paks or controllers you have inserted, then look for *.BAS or an OS-9 disk on the most significant device out of the ones present. Using a custom *.BAS program you can then launch off to whatever you want in a seamless fashion whether it be a menu of games, embedded apps, utilities, custom OS-9 builds, etc., even from the Web!
- To go to the DOS prompt instead of auto-booting, hold down the BREAK key during power-up. Devices will still be detected and configured, but you won’t auto-boot.
- Enjoy fast speeds of 115200 bps for bitbanger, 115200 bps wired or wireless/bluetooth 6551 serial, and a blazing 230400 bps for the Drive Pak (2 gig MicroSD card pak)
- Move disks and files between your CoCo and PC using a bitbanger cable, Tandy RS-232 Pak, or Deluxe Wireless RS-232 Pak
- Easily add small or huge OS-9 floppies or mass drives on the Drive Pak, and virtually unlimited 256-floppy partitions, switchable from DOS!
- Grab web files and save them to a mounted remote disk using one Disk BASIC command (an HTTP-GET front end)
- Append parameters to your request URLs to run and control web scripts and services (over bitbanger or 6551)
- Use your real floppy drives (1mhz controlled speed for safety)
- Mix and match any 4 drive types at once and perform all standard DOS commands between disks!
- Mount any Drive Pak partition from DOS using the DRIVE command and even use DSKI$/DSKO$ to access raw sectors.

On startup, CoCoNet automatically mounts and sorts each drive type for 0-3.
CoCoNet then looks for a bootable disk on Drive 0. A bootable disk is one that contains a *.BAS program. Eventually, support for automatically booting OS-9 disks will be added.

The CoCoNet “ROM” can be booted from whatever device you own that accepts a 27128 EPROM.
You just have to use your imagination, like when you’re looking at a set of BASIC commands and asking, “what can I do with this?”. Pretty much everything.

For example, if you do these but forget to switch back, and then type SAVE “MYGAME” on accident, DOS will do that.
DRIVE# SET# 0,0,0 (mount LSN $000000 as the DOS partition and access it as 256 disks… although you’d want to use DSKI$/DSKO$ only to perform raw sector surgery)

Hello everybody,

I have just finished a “wolfenstein 3D” style raycasting demo for the CoCo 3. It took countless hours but I am very proud of the result. One of my goal was to try to get it as fast as SockMaster’s Gloom demo. Here are the main features and info:

- Optimized raycasting engine
- Fullscreen (256 x 192) in 16 colors, effective resolution is 128 x 192
- Rock-solid, ultra precise 16-bit math calculations
- Player to wall collision detection, with ‘sliding’ on wall
- Keyboard + Joystick simultaneous control: Analog joystick controls view, and keyboard controls movement
- Use classic shooter “W A S D” keys or regular arrows. Strafe left/right, move forward/backward
- 3D look up and down
- No ‘fish-eye’ effect: precise perspective correction
- Fast delta segment rendering: approx. 15-20 frame per second
- Small executable: almost everything is calculated at runtime
- “Unlimited” view distance: limited only by maze size.
- No clipping
- Works on plain CoCo 3 with 128KB

In the spring of ’82 when I bought my first D board CoCo there weren’t any games except perhaps Dino Wars and Super Bustout available in any Radio Shack store I visited. Finally in late summer or early fall I found Space Assault and Polaris in Charlottesville which was a 2 hour drive each way. By the end of the year the more popular Program Paks were appearing in local stores. As soon as I heard about Rainbow Magazine I subscribed and my first issue was the Dec. ’82 issue. When I received that first issue I literally spent an hour just looking at all the great games and other software and hardware available. But I still clearly remember the early days when I only had 2 games to play. Fortunately they were very good games.

I always enjoyed playing this Pole Position clone. Only thing was if you played it numerous times it would all of a sudden seem to get easier. Don’t know if you could all of a sudden go faster relative to the other cars or if there were more cars to pass or what but all of a sudden I could easily get 100,000 points when I normally struggled to get 80,000. And it wasn’t just getting in the groove. Because once it got easy it stayed that way as long as you were running the game. Anyone else remember that happening to them?

Oh and I got the game when it first came out. So if you got the game later and it didn’t happen then perhaps they released a corrected version.

When I ordered this game I thought it was a clone of Astro Blaster. Well it is no Astro Blaster not even a cheap knockoff. Then years later I was at the local Pizza Hut and they had an Astro Blast cocktail table game. I didn’t play it. But from the demo screen it look pretty much identical to the Mark Data game.

The two Mark Data Games I have are this one and Haywire. Both use a semi-graphics mode not supported on the CoCo 3. Haywire uses a semi-graphics mode for the score screen and it doesn’t display at all. You can play the game but you have no idea what your score is. Astro-Blast uses a semi-graphics mode for the title screen. Only have of it displays. Unfortunately the half that doesn’t display is the half that shows what difficulty level you are selecting. But it does play just fine on a CoCo 3.

Well, I didn’t see this one coming. I knew I was in for a treat when the game’s boot screen said someone said this game could never be done on the CoCo3, as it was originally released for the MM/1. The title screen was interesting as at the botton it spells out the who’s and what’s of a challenge someone evidently laid down. Oh… did I mention the title screen also plays a respectable digitized version of Chaka Kahn’s song ‘Feel for You’.

From the digitized sfx to the colorful, smooth, and fast animation and fluid game play, this game is top notch all around. Someone asked me if I could put a video up of it and I said sure, why not. What a surprise. Although I thoroughly SUCK at it right now (hence three games just to fill in some time) I had a blast playing it. after playing for a while while recording the video, I can say I fully intend to play more. Great game, glad someone laid down a challenge. I’m even more glad he lost because we ALL benefitted from this one!!

JEWELED (c) 2008 is a very cool Bejeweled type game by Roger Taylor. It requires a 512k CoCo 3 and a joystick or mouse, and features background jam music.

Jeweled will run in the VCC CoCo 3 emulator and M.E.S.S. emulators. In fact - the game was completely designed from a Windows Vista PC and tested under emulation only! That’s right - Jeweled was designed from the Rainbow IDE. Only until mid 2009 was Jeweled actually run on the author’s real CoCo 3 !

Only about 30 copies were sold as of September 25, 2009, about one year out from the release date, proving that even at such a low price, CoCo software and games are hard to SELL these days. Regardless, the elite CoCo gamers wasted no time grabbing their copy.

Here’s one of the best games I’ve ever played on the CoCo3 - Sinistaar. The graphics are pretty darn close to the arcade, though briza said it could have been better had the programmer taken advantage of GIME chip. The sfx are pretty cool and the ‘I hunger’ and ‘I live’ and ‘Run coward, run!’ that the Sinistaar taunts you with sound almost as good as they did on the arcade game Sinistar, and just as creepy. Overall, it’s very fun and entertaining game. I have no idea if it’s a type of game that you just keep playing until you hit a kill screen or not as I’ve never gotten past the forth level. And Roger is very correct, is DOES take a while to load.

This game was the de-facto standard Donkey Kong clone for virtually any 8-bit system. The graphics, sound and levels all were so close to the original Donkey Kong that it made the other versions (officially licensed) on other systems pale by comparison. That is until 2007, when Sockmaster released his port/emulation of the REAL Donkey Kong on the CoCo3.

This game came from an initial request to write a tornado-chase game featuring Mary Kramer (from the CoCoNutz e-zine). While laying out the framework to such a game, the bees and butterflies kinda took over and the game ended up being what it is.

Mary must catch as many butterflies as possible without getting stung by any bee. That’s it. It’s fun watching the score climb knowing you’ve got 3 bees on your fanny about to sting you if you make a wrong move.

This is a 3-D based first-person shooter game and probably the closest thing to a ‘Doom’ play-alike that we will see for a while.

The game features cool sound effects and fast 3-D action.

Hi,

I played the text adventure game ‘Bedlam’ on a Coco as a kid. I never won but the game fascinated me and when recently I started messing around with Coco emulators, Bedlam was one of the first things I loaded.

I decided to ‘modernize’ the game a bit and I’ve created something that might be fun for any fans of the original game. Basically I’ve recreated Bedlam but made it multiplayer and accessible online. So now you can wonder around the asylum with other players

You can connect to the game using telnet or any terminal program that supports telnet connections. For a truly authentic experience, set your program to 32 x 16 and a black on green screen.

The game is running at www.groupunix.com port 6809
The url telnet://www.groupunix.com:6809 might work depending on your system, or the command:

telnet www.groupunix.com 6809

is another way to check it out. Things are not quite finished, but you can solve the game.

I’m interested to see if anyone still gets a kick out of games like this. I might convert more old text adventures such as Pyramid 2000, Rakkatu, etc if there is interest.

I have some fond memories of these unusual adventures…. does anyone have these programs? Arconiax Assignment was billed as the world’s first scratch n sniff adventure and The Trip was a quirky graphic adventure. I’d love to play them again, so I’m hoping someone can upload them

A few BIG caveats:

* CoCo 1/2 only! Uses a video mode not available on the CoCo 3.

* PAL only! On an NTSC machine, you will see nonsense at the top of the screen, as there isn’t enough time to do everything out of the visible area.

* Untested! I don’t have an RSDOS cart, so this has only been tested under emulation

So all that aside, if you’re still interested, here’s a little thing I’m working on (very slowly):

http://www.6809.org.uk/tmp/da/demo-coco.dsk

It’s a 40T SS disk image (well, 35 I guess, but there’s enough data there for 40). Type ‘DOS’ to start – *hopefully* it’ll work on real hardware! Would love to know…

Edit: oh yeah, W, S, A, D, Enter! Numbers switch in various options.
Edit 2: should also point out it needs 64K

Does anyone know of if there’s a complete archive of the Chromasette series on tape – either .CAS or .DSK images? I’ve been trying to find the whole catalog but so far no luck.

I did put in a couple of bids on this auction that just ended, but someone else must have really wanted them. I was hoping to create images of them for archival purposes.

BTW – the same bidder also snagged this lot of Rainbow on tape:

The bidder must be an avid CoCo fan and a collector – picked up a good sized lot at a decent price.

Hi Fellow coconuts.

Curious to know if anyone has takened a look at the OS9 dsk images in the 500mb archive in the Maltemedia website. If you do. look at the image that has AR, CITY. This is the image that contains the game CITY of REALITY.
The only problem I found is that it won’t run under OS-9 Level II and as it is OS-9 level 1 game it uses the graphic drivers and what not in it. And I don’t have a clue how OS-9 Level 1 operates only ever learned to use the Coco 3 version.
Also I’m certain you need a Character Disk to play the game, So far I have not found it in the archive set, But on the image disk you find a directory called CHR<city something like that. Well I get a error 207 if I try and look at it.
maybe a talented programmer in here can figure out how to get it running, So far I only get a Intro screen in nice fancy fonts displaying then asks for the Character disk.
So hopefully this year we will see copies of this OS-9 game floating around on the net.

Hi! More CoCo 1/2 / Dragon stuff here, as I release a demo of 3D Deathchase.

This is a conversion of the highly regarded Spectrum game, using the original Z80 source code, provided by “The Executioner” from when he was making a conversion to the Amstrad CPC system.

I intend to make it run on a 16K machine, but (for now) you will have to use a machine with 32K or more RAM.

Controls and loading instructions are on the website:
Deathchase demo.

Hi,

I’m looking for a game that I had on my Coco 2, which was a Pac-Man clone but with huge mazes.

The game was running in PMODE 4/SCREEN 1,1 mode, with no “intended” colors, and the Pac-man character and ghosts were much smaller than in any other clones I’ve seen for the Coco. Thus, the mazes were much “bigger” and complex. There was no scrolling, the mazes were all contained in a single screen, but since the distance between walls was much smaller, the mazes were more complex. (Just to be sure there’s no confusion, I’m not talking about Megabug.)

I just got coco3.com’s Super CoCo Archive DVD and was attempting to fix the Space Quest 1 that is on the “pre-loaded” VCC vurtual hard drive (I still don’t know who set up this image but, thanks for the wonderful set of default tools; some of which I cannot find elsewhere).

My current VCC setup is HD6309 2MB NitrOS-9 3.2.8 and I’m using the following modules for VCC Cloud-9 Hard Drive emulation: EmuDsk (CRC $85815B); H0 ($BE79DA); DD ($BDBB72) and I use covdg.io and not covdg_small.io

During play I drop the orat part before the alien hologram on Kerona and the triangular doorway appears. As soon as I step through it, an error occurs. The version on the CoCo Archive DVD does not crash at this point (although it does have some other quirks, but not as many as the version I an currently using). Therefore I am replacing the files on the hard drive with those on the DVD.

I use lha to make an archive of the game on the hard drive. I then copied the files from the DVD. I setup a VDG window and run the game. Oops, it want’s disk 1. Forgot about the toc.txt. I remember vaguely about how to do this because I moved my original KQ3 to DS 40tk disks back in the day (I guess about 17 years now). So I flip to another window and check the format of the toc.txt for Kings Quest 1 and then modify the SQ1 toc.txt to:

[code:1:aa04c89fa1]h0 s1 v0 v1 v2[/code:1:aa04c89fa1]

I delete the toc file and run the togen only to get the following:

[code:1:aa04c89fa1]{W7|05}/DD/USR/SQ1:tocgen toc.txt
Disk number missing:
h0 s1 v0 v1 v2
[/code:1:aa04c89fa1]

After some experimenting I found that neither the "preload" or the DVD vesrion of tocgen could process the toc.txt file.

My question now is, "How did the toc file that works with the hard drive get generated in the first place?" Is there a new version of tocgen that accepts "h0" as a parameter?

A closer examination of the toc file reveals that the original toc and a new toc I chaged to read:

[code:1:aa04c89fa1]d0 s1 v0 v1 v2[/code:1:aa04c89fa1]

...has only one difference in the 4th byte. The toc that used d0 as the drive has a "00" as the fourth byte and the original toc that uses h0 (I assume because tocgen cannot process the file) has "01" as the fourth byte.

WEIRD NOTE:
I also noticed that a toc.txt that uses "d0" and a toc.txt that uses "dd" produce the exact same toc file.

Anyone who has information about how to generate a toc file for use on a hard drive or can point me in the direction of a newer TOCGen that can produce a toc file for use on a hard drive, please drop me a line here in the forums.

I am looking forward to playing Manhunter 1 as I was never able to complete this on my Dad's Tandy 1000SX. And of course SQ0 and SQTLC because I have never played these.

Thanks,

Hey all,

Alright, still in the process of recording some of my games so that future generations of you-tubers can experience my childhood. Decided to go ahead and try to get a personal high score in Galactic Attack. I was shooting for 15,000 and ended up with 16,000 (after several attempts). Another pretty fast game for the Coco1/2, but this one has truly the most grating sound effects ever created by the machine.

(p.s. I’m not REALLY proud of my score, since there is still another zero to the left, I know that anything less than 100,000 is probably not that impressive)

Hey, just wondering if anyone on here has beaten the game downland. I remember beating it once, and it restarted on level 1, with the acid drops falling closer to the ropes. Pretty sure I died immediately on the first rope because of that.

I also remember the level before the last one, or maybe it was the last level that I always had a problem with. It had a horizontal rope at the top, and you had to get from that rope to a vertical rope next to it. The only way I could get past it was to drop from the horizontal rope, die, and then use my next life to get through the door. Anyone have a solution to that level which doesn’t involve dying?

Hey guys! For the Apple II there was the “asimov” archive of just about everything ever written or hacked for the Apple II. Is there anything like that for the coco? I have seen other threads in the forum where people asked similar questions and they were just directed to google. I’ve done that before and attempted to find the old games I used to play on my coco1, but maybe only found one or two at most. I know some folks have the complete Chromosette collection on their harddrive, and am just thinking that it is a shame that there is a lot of old software that is going to get lost or forgotten over time unless an archive is setup that allows uploads, etc. If there are people that have a lot of stuff, but don’t know where to put it, please speak up. Worst case maybe I could setup a free ftp server for ongoing use.

Once upon a time, in the ram memory of a CoCo long long ago, I had a copy of this game. But alas, the ravages of time have plagued the tiny magnetic particles of my disk, so that no longer magnetic are they! Hither and yon have I searched the vast internet, but to no avail. Can anyone help a poor nostalgic CoCo user, please? Can you send me a DSK image?

[img:98ecdb1263]http://nitros9.lcurtisboyle.com/erland1.gif[/img:98ecdb1263]

I got the screen shot from a web site, but they do not have the game available to download…

Erland is the successor to Prickly-Pear Software’s hit strategy game, Viking. Erland, unlike Viking, required 32K of RAM, and was a lot more sophisticated in what you could do to build up your kingdom. Erland requires at least 2 players, and allows up to 5, unlike Computer Shack’s game of a similiar vein, Castle Greymoon, which was single player only. Erland also added the option of saving a game in progress, unlike either of the other two.

Title: Erland

Author: Tim Bremser and Lloyd Pulley

Publisher: Prickly-Pear Software

Released: 1984

Does anyone know if there is one for (Nitr)OS-9 6×09? Does anyone know if the Z-code interpreter that comes with the Infocom games can run more recent games created with Inform (assuming they don’t use unsupported features)?

In a fit of retro gaming nostalgia and with the help of several members of the maltedmedia Color computer group I was motivated to create a blog/website dedicated to my very old game on Color Computer that was published in 1989 by Sundog Systems. It’s called Paladin’s Legacy and it runs on any Color Computer I,II, III with 64k ram and 5.25 floppy drive. Thanks to the VCC Emulator, it also now runs on any WIndows XP or Vista system.

Everything you need is at this site if you want to play the game on your Windows or Vista system…..ie… The original game manual, VCC Emulator, the floppy disk images (PaladinsLegacy_Playerdisk.dsk and PaladinsLegacy_Citydisk.dsk) and instructions on how to setup VCC for the game.

http://paladinslegacy.spaces.live.com/

I hope someone enjoys it.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the game or the site.

Some of you may remember Death Trap, a game where you drive a tank (that can’t even shoot!) around a huge maze full of power-ups, represented by letters. You were also chased by some homing mine that would warp you randomly after blowing up your tank.

http://nitros9.lcurtisboyle.com/deathtrap.html
[img:d0998dc186]http://nitros9.lcurtisboyle.com/death_trap.gif[/img:d0998dc186]

Through the use of the “M” powerups you encounter at specific points in the maze, you can get an over-head map from there, but the view is nowhere big enough to ever show the whole thing.

I’m sure I’m not the only one that wondered what the whole maze would look like…

Since I’m good at reverse-engineering video-games (having cracked the level format for F-Zero, Starfox and Super Mario 64) I decided to give it a try.

The .bin version is 8k, which is way to small to contain the whole map uncompressed, so I took a look at a game disk I found somewhere on the net (JOGOS3.DSK) which contained the game. Here’s what I found in there:

[img:d0998dc186]http://homepage.mac.com/qubedstudios/dt_map_raw.png[/img:d0998dc186]

It looked familiar, but no matter what codec I used to decode the image I still didn’t get the actual map. What I found is that the bitmap on the top is for horizontal walls, while the one on the bottom is for vertical walls.

With that in mind, I combined the two bitmaps to get this:
[img:d0998dc186]http://homepage.mac.com/qubedstudios/dt_map_2d.png[/img:d0998dc186]

Nice isn’t it? Each corner of the map brings a lot of memories to me!

If you use a paint bucket tool on a white area of the map you’ll find that the tank can actually go anywhere in the maze without using a warp, except the D of the word END, the squares and three triangles made by the “S” figure at the bottom left of the map.

Another big exception is that big area on the top right of the map, which is disconnected from the rest of the maze. I used to call this area “the desert”, because of the wavy pattern made by walls, and the fact that you would “starve” out of fuel in the longest diagonal stretches. Looking at the area in the context of the whole map shows that it was probably indeed intended as a desert-like area, with a pyramid in the center.

Looking at the text found in the game data, it seems that it’s possible to actually finish the game. I’m not sure if it requires getting every single power-ups, or maybe just all the diamonds. Nevertheless, at least one diamond is trapped inside a square, so you have to be extremely lucky and get warped inside that square to get this particular diamond (then wait for the homing mine to get warped elsewhere!)

Now, wouldn’t be cool to have a 3d remake of Death Trap? I still have to find where and how the power-up positions are stored, but here’s a glimpse of how it could look:

[img:d0998dc186]http://homepage.mac.com/qubedstudios/dt_map_part1.jpg[/img:d0998dc186]
[img:d0998dc186]http://homepage.mac.com/qubedstudios/dt_map_part2.jpg[/img:d0998dc186]

[img:d0998dc186]http://homepage.mac.com/qubedstudios/dt_map_small.gif[/img:d0998dc186]
